The other day, my wife woke me up a little before 6 AM, and it was incredibly light outside.
I immediately reached over to my nightstand and grabbed my eye blinders—that wonderful little invention that covers your eyes to make it darker than dark.
They helped me sleep for a few extra minutes.
Race Horses also wear eye- blinders. When they are running the Kentucky Derby, horses are forced to look straight ahead, because the blinders inhibit them from looking to the right or left.
The Bible says: “Look straight ahead, and fix your eyes on what lies before you.” (Prov. 4:25, NLT2)
It seems that the writer of Proverbs knew the benefit of fixing your eyes straight ahead.
The writer of Hebrews said: “Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith….” (12:2, NIV)
As disciples of Jesus, we are to keep our eyes fixed in a central locationà on the Son of God.
We are not to get caught up in looking to the right or to the leftà doing this will lead us down a path that we shouldn’t go down. It’s our job to fix our eyes on the One who is worth looking at.
As we fix our gaze on Jesus, we will find that, as the song writer said: “the things of this earth will grow strangely dim in the light of His glory and grace.”
Do you have your blinders on?
